Madonna Earns Standing Ovations From Crowd

Madonna may not have charmed film critics with her second directorial effort, but she still has plenty of fans.

A "Venice Film Festival" source says the "Material Girl" got a "10-minute standing ovation" from the crowd that saw the premiere of her new picture "W.E.", in the "Sala Grande" on Thursday.

Reviewers have not been so kind:

"The Hollywood Reporter" deemed the picture - which alternates between the stories of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII and a contemporary N.Y.C. woman (Abbie Cornish) obsessed with their romance - a "sumptuous documentary about a young beauty on an exclusive shopping expedition."

The bad notices didn't dim the buzz surrounding the party that Madonna held later that night on the terrace of the "Hotel Bauer" there.

Insiders say the guest list was limited to cast and crew, and security was "extremely tight."
